Labour ahead in new poll

Labour have maintained their lead over the Conservatives, despite the fallout from the visa scandal which prompted David Blunkett’s resignation on Wednesday, according to a poll.

Labour are three points ahead of Michael Howard’s Conservative Party on 35 percent, according to The Daily Telegraph poll.

The figures show no change on the YouGov poll taken in November.

The Liberal Democrats are down two points on 21 percent.

Support for the smaller parties, such as United Kingdom Independence Party and the Greens, rose from seven to 12 per cent.

Mr Blair was still the most popular leader on 31 points, although down on the 52 per points he received in 2001.

Mr Howard was second on 20 points ahead of Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy on 15.

On the question of what voters thought of the Government’s record to date, 21 per cent approved while 57 per cent disapproved.

Most voters (57 per cent) believed a future Conservative government would be untrustworthy, compared to 20 per cent who thought the opposite.

Labour was adjudged dishonest by 66 per cent of respondents compared to 24 per cent who thought the Blair administration honest.

YouGov interviewed 1,932 people online between December 14-16, with a tenth of the number questioned after the resignation of Mr Blunkett.
