Government releases more reshuffle details

Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:00 AM

The Government has confirmed more Ministerial moves as the reshuffle continues this afternoon.

Energy Minister Stephen Timms has been appointed as Financial Secretary to the Treasury - a job he held some years ago.

The Transport Minister Kim Howells - renowned for his plain speaking - has been appointed as Higher Education Minister, replacing the new Work and Pensions Secretary Alan Johnson. Dr Howells is succeeded by the junior Transport Minister Tony McNulty.

Charlotte Atkins leaves the Whips Office to take his place as Transport Under-Secretary.

Former Financial Secretary to the Treasury Ruth Kelly moves to the Cabinet Office, where she will work with the new Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and election campaign chief, Alan Milburn.

Foreign Minister Mike O'Brien succeeds Mr Timms at the DTI as Energy Minister.

Douglas Alexander, who was previously Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office, takes over Mr O'Brien's job as a Foreign and Trade Minister, "shared" between the FCO and DTI.

Finally, in the House of Lords, Education Minister Baroness Ashton and Constitutional Affairs Minister Lord Filkin have swapped jobs.
