CBI appoint new president

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has appointed John Sunderland as its new president.

John Sunderland is also executive chairman of Cadbury Schweppes, president of the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers and president of the UK Food and Drink Federation.

Following Tuesday’s confirmation of his appointment at the CBI’s general meeting, Mr Sunderland said: “I want to use my presidency to re-focus business efforts on restoring corporate reputation.

“It has taken a real battering in recent years and if we don’t put our own house in order, the talented younger generation will simply turn its back on all that business has to offer.

“Through the new Combined Code, UK business is now setting itself the highest standards of corporate governance in the world.”

Mr Sunderland said that he would campaign to place business, wealth and job creation at the heart of every political parties’ agenda in the run up to the next general election.

The outgoing president, Sir John Egan, will become deputy president for a year before the election of a new deputy.

Digby Jones, director general of the CBI, said he was delighted by the appointment and said he looked “forward to working closely with him as
we continue the fight to get all parts of society to understand how important business really is.”

The president’s post is unpaid, though it is considered extremely prestigious within the business community.
