Nathan Coleman, the man questioned by police in connection with a shooting on Boxing Day that left one police officer dead and another seriously wounded, is also wanted in the US on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to murder.

Police said fingerprints taken from Coleman were consistent with those of David Bieber, a man wanted for a murder in Florida in 1995.

Deputy Larry King of the Lee County Sheriff’s Department said: “It is the same person, confirmed by FBI fingerprint records.”

He is wanted for the murder of personal trainer Markus Mueller, a German national.

Meanwhile, British police continue to question the 37-year-old nightclub bouncer in connection with the killing of Pc Ian Broadhurst in Leeds.

Coleman was arrested at 0200GMT by armed police at a bed and breakfast in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, after a tip off.

Chief Superintendent Bob Pattison of Northumbria Police said the assailant did not resist arrest and no shots were fired.
