Truck bomb kills four in Iraq

A truck bomb blast in the northern Iraqi Kurdish city of Irbil has killed at least four people and injured 20.

Iraqi officials say that the bomb killed the suicide bomber as well as two policemen guarding the building and a passer-by.

The ministry itself was severely damaged, while nearby buildings had their windows shattered.

The blast marks a continuation of attacks by insurgents in the region, and its location in what was previously thought to be a stable sector of Iraq may cause some concern.

Some experts say the focus of attention now appears to be widening, as attackers target both foreign troops, but also Iraqis seen as working for the coalition.

The news comes as calm had only just begun to return to Baghdad following some of the heaviest fighting in weeks between US forces and Iraqi insurgents.

Several explosions were heard in the city overnight, as heavy gunfire rocked the centre.
