Second drive-by shooting in past 24 hours

Saturday, 4 October 2003 5:18 AM

Detectives are investigating a second drive-by shooing in the last 24 hours.

Three men are in hospital following an assumed drive-by shooting in Reading, Berkshire, at about 22:30BST on Friday night.

The men were blasted with a shotgun in Elm Park Road, opposite Battle Hospital in the west of Reading.

It is the third gun shooting in the space of a week.

The shooting came after the incident in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire yesterday, in which 32-year-old David King of Stevenage was killed and another wounded. Police said the attack was "targeted."

Mr King reportedly had a criminal record.

The shooting took place yesterday morning on Brewery Road, near a gymnasium and a supermarket, in the quiet market town of Hoddesdon.

And on Tuesday, there was a fatal shooting at a jeweller's shop in Arnold, Nottinghamshire.

Shop owner, Marian Bates, was murdered after trying to prevent robbers from shooting her daughter, Xanthe.
