British troops attacked in Basra

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that one British soldier has been killed, and two more injured in southern Iraq.
The men were travelling in what has been described as a 'clearly marked' military ambulance when their vehicle was caught in a blast.
It is believed that a device was detonated by remote control when the vehicle passed near by.
Tensions have been running high in Basra over the past few weeks, with local demonstrations and riots over a lack of fuel. However this attack would seem to mark a significant step change in opposition to occupying forces.
British forces will be hoping that this apparently premeditated attack is not an indication of the growth of a more sophisticated terrorist resistance.
