Large windfarm planned for Wales

A £25 million wind farm capable of powering 25,000 homes is being planned for a deprived community in Wales, it has emerged today.

The farm is proposed for hills surrounding the community of Cwmtillery in Blaenau Gwent, a reclaimed mining town, and will consist of 20 to 30 turbines, each 300ft high.

Locals were planning to object to the plan but the company involved, Pennant Wind Energy Ventures Ltd, has offered the community £4m over the next 20 years.

The company wants to build Pendragon Windfarm near to the town and share the profits with local people.

Managing director Dale Hart explained that the £4m could be doubled to £8m if suitable funding from public bodies could be found.

'We will soon be distributing leaflets to all households in the wards of Brynmawr, Blaina, Nantyglo, Cwmtillery, Abertillery, Six Bells and Llanhilleth, asking local people how the green dividend may best be used for community benefits,' he said.

The company said it would take all reasonable measures to minimise the visual impact and there would be no need for new electricity pylons.

An environmental study is being completed and plans will be submitted to Blaenau Gwent County Council.
