Campaign against 'European super state' launches fund

Sunday, 18 May 2003 12:00 AM

Opponents of British entry into the Euro have launched a campaign fund to protest against the proposed European Constitution.

The campaign has been launched following the publication of the draft constitution which has seen critics describe it as the first step to a 'European Super state'.

Despite being criticised by many of the smaller members of the EU for giving member states, especially the larger ones, too much power, the large states oppose it as they fear it could lead to the EU gaining sweeping new powers. As a result several states have already confirmed that they are to hold a referendum on the issue.

The Sunday Telegraph reports that the new group will be called Vote 2004 and is being created out of the No campaign against British entry into the single currency.

Lord Saatchi told the newspaper of his support for the group: 'On 9 June Gordon Brown will indicate that there will be no referendum on the single currency in this Parliament, showing that the No campaign directed at the Prime Minister will have succeeded.

'The point about the No campaign was that it was directed at an audience of one - the Prime Minister. This campaign will be the same in reverse: it will be directed at the Prime Minister but will be calling for a referendum.'
