Queen's speech fails to tackle immediate needs of people and business - Moore

Commenting on the Queen’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament on 18 November, local MP Michael Moore has condemned the Government for failing to tackle the immediate needs of local people and businesses in coping with the recession.

Commenting Mr Moore said:

“With the impact of the recession really hitting home, this Queen’s speech was a missed opportunity for Gordon Brown to fulfil Labour’s broken promises and to help those in need.

“Measures to tackle bankers’ bonuses are needed in the long term, but this is not what is needed to help businesses through this recession. Where are the measures to force the nationalised banks to free up credit to local businesses in the Borders?

“At a time when one in five young people are unemployed, why is the Government announcing measures to store the DNA of innocent young people for six years, rather than helping them into jobs and training?

“This Queen’s Speech will only add to the public distrust in Parliament. Ahead of the General Election, the Government ought to have focused on cleaning up politics so that the next Parliament has the trust and legitimacy to govern.”
