Alistair Burt MP and Nadine Dorries MP, the two Conservative MPs representing Bedford Borough, paid tribute today to Frank Branston, the Mayor of Bedford, who has died suddenly.
‘We are deeply saddened at the loss of Frank Branston. He was a powerful voice for Bedford, the town in which he was steeped, a successful businessman and a formidable politician. He made a success as the first holder of the role of elected Mayor with skill and determination, and was always motivated by a desire for the best in Bedford.
In such a role, personal qualities count for much, and Frank’s immense character, strong opinions and drive have made an impact for good on us, our constituents and the area. We shall greatly miss working with him as a colleague for the benefit of Bedford, and he leaves a huge gap in the leadership of the community.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Marlies and the family, and we know that very many people will share their loss and sorrow’
Alistair Burt MP added "I am deeply sorry and distressed to hear the news of Frank Branston’s death. First of all this is a desperate tragedy for his family and our thoughts and prayers go out to them. It leaves a gaping hole in Bedford’s politics. As a big character he made a significant impact as the first elected Mayor of the Borough, and his drive and determination will be much missed. This is a very sad day for Bedfordshire.
"Frank was an extraordinary local politician, with a drive to get things done in the difficult atmosphere of Bedford politics. I rarely had a cross word with him, and any disagreement was political and never personal. He was generous and kind to me on my election, as he knew far more about Bedford than I did and I admired how he used his role as Mayor. I will miss him, as we all will, and he leaves very big shoes to fill."
