John Baron MP supports Autism Bill in Parliament

Today in Parliament John Baron voiced his support of the Autism Bill as it received its “third reading” in the Commons. The Bill is a Private Members Bill sponsored by fellow Conservative Cheryl Gillan MP. The aims of the legislation are to improve recognition of children and adults with autism and to ensure their needs are addressed – especially during the crucial transition from childhood to adulthood. Having cleared the Commons the Bill now moves to the House of Lords.
Intervening in the debate, John asked:
“In addition to the people with autism, the condition also affects families and loved ones. A recent study showed that 90% of parents worry about the future of their autistic child after they leave home, especially given that only 15% of adults with autism are in full-time. Isn’t this yet another reason why the Bill is needed?”
Cheryl Gillan, the Bill’s sponsor, agreed that many people also worry about the future of their autistic children after the parents die.
Commenting afterwards, John said:
“This important Bill will help many people with autism who at present are being ignored by the system. The Government has recognised the need to act in this area and allowed the Bill to proceed with cross-party support, which I welcome.
“Too many children and adults with autism are currently falling through the gaps and too many local authorities are failing to include their needs in the planning of services. This Bill will be the first law of its kind and will hopefully put that right.”
