John Baron MP meets Basildon Hospital Management about CQC Report

Friday, 27, Nov 2009 12:00

Following the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) Report which highlighted poor standards of hygiene, John has today met with Alan Whittle (Chief Executive) and Michael Large (Chairman) of the Basildon Hospital NHS Trust to discuss the matter. He also had a tour round both A & E wards.

John said:

“At our meeting I made clear this Report needed an urgent and positive response. I stressed the top priority must be to deliver immediate improvement in care for the sake of existing and future patients, and their families.”

“Having had detailed discussions, I have been assured that the improvements in hygiene recommended by the Report are now in place. A nursing hit-squad is ensuring that the highest possible standards are being met.”

“Monitor, the Independent Regulator, must now quickly assemble a team of Independent Senior Clinicians and conduct a thorough evidenced-based investigation as to whether there has been a systemic failure. The Hospital will fully co-operate with this.”

“I do not believe that an Independent Inquiry is the right way to go because these, in the past, have too often focused on looking for flaws in the regulatory process. Hygiene and care are the key issues here, not regulation. Monitor is best placed to deal with this.”
