Description:
The U8 is a non-partisan platform, enabling students from around the world to discuss some of the most pressing issues of our generation. It was founded as a reaction to the 2005 G8 summit, where a small group of countries seemed to set the development agenda. We believe that those affected by global poverty should have the strongest voice in discussing development issues.
We’ve previously brought students from across Europe, South and Central Asia, Africa as well as Central America together to discuss development issues in person with a view to engaging policy makers and the media. Our summits in Warwick and Cambridge brought the student voice to the attention of governments and the world’s media, including the Guardian and Hindu.
But 2011 sees our most ambitious project to date: we want students from all around the world to be able to participate in a truly global conversation – not just a few hundred. And so in November 2011 we’ll have the first U8 online summit, enabling thousands of students from around the world to share ideas and perspectives with each other.
Team Leader and Director roles
We’re looking for experienced students and recent graduates with a strong track record of running student societies, events or with relevant work experience to take up Team Leader roles in the organisation. Working on average at least 20 hours a week over the summer and potentially until December, you will have a high degree of autonomy and be responsible for a specific function, reporting to the relevant Director on the Executive Committee. For truly exceptional candidates we may consider Director roles.
As well as an interest in international development and helping the U8 achieve its aims, we are particularly interested in applicants with an interest or any experience or skills in at least one of the following:
?Language skills (French, Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin/Cantonese in particular)
?Technology – website design or functionality, videoconferencing, technological capacity in developing countries
?Running student societies
?Event management
?Marketing strategy
?Design and marketing – both the creative side as well as account management
?Fundraising and corporate social responsibility
?Media, communications and public relations
?Consultancy, including managing change and systemic analysis
We are also very interested to hear from current students interested in linking their university societies to the U8 and participating in the global online summit.
Our past interns and members of the Executive Committee have gone on to work for international organisations such as the UN, civil service fast streams in developed and developing countries, charities, management consultancies and think tanks, as well as academia. We have a strong track record of developing our volunteers' skills and preparing them for careers in the public, private and third sector.
The roles would be based from home, although there may be occasional meetings in London: as a global organisation we believe geography should not be a barrier to helping us grow, but that doesn’t mean we won’t expect as much effort from you.
