Ruth Kelly has allegedly blocked gay rights legislation
Ruth Kelly has faced calls to give up her responsibilities for equality issues after she allegedly attempted to block gay rights legislation.

The Liberal Democrats condemned the communities secretary – who is a devout Catholic – as an unsuitable candidate to defend gay rights.

They were responding to reports in the Observer that, with the backing of the prime minister, Ms Kelly had blocked laws intended to ensure that people had access to services regardless of their sexuality

It was reported that Mr Blair, who sent three of his children to Catholic schools, and Ms Kelly were concerned over the impact on faith schools.

Ms Kelly has previously faced questions over her membership of religious organisation Opus Dei, and for refusing to say whether she considers homosexuality a sin.

The government has insisted it is committed to preventing discrimination, but gay rights charities have backed the calls for Ms Kelly to resign.
