David Cameron Conservative leader, comments on the part-nationalisation of several UK banks:
"In many ways the government had no option.
"Today isn't a day for celebration or triumph. It needs to be done, it had our support, but it's painful and difficult."
"Let's be clear, we're saving the banking system not just for its own sake but to save the wider economy.
"Not to act would be worse than to act."
