Timpson: I won't let voters down

Friday, 23, May 2008 12:00

The victor of the Crewe and Nantwich by-election has pledged he will not let those who backed him down in Westminster.

Edward Timpson, who took nearly half the votes cast in the by-election, paid tribute to the late Gwyneth Dunwoody.

"It is with the deepest respect that I follow in her footsteps to parliament," he said.

Mr Timpson continued: "For the first time many of you have voted Conservative. I have a special message for you. I am on your side and I won't let you down.

"I'm going to stand up for local families, stand up for local jobs and when I need to stand up to the government on your behalf.

"Today you have rejected the old politics and voted for the positive alternative put forward by the Conservative party.

"Crewe and Nantwich has voted against Gordon Brown's decision to scrap the 10p rate and for a party that will work to relieve the burdens on hard-working families. Against a Labour party that thinks crime is something we have to live with and for a party that has a plan to cut crime and end our broken society. Against a government that is cutting local services for a party that will stand up for local communities.

"Above all you have sent a message loud and clear - that Gordon Brown just does not get it, and the government needs to change."
