Gordon Brown has praised Ian Paisley's "huge contribution" to political life in Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Following Mr Paisley's decision to stand down as first minister in May, the prime minister has paid tribute to his often controversial political career.
Mr Brown said the whole country "values and admires" the way in which he has led as first minister, having held the position since power-sharing was restored to Northern Ireland last May.
He continued: "His commitment and dedication to public service deserve our gratitude.
"Progress on bringing a lasting peace to Northern Ireland would not have been possible without his immense courage and leadership."
