Lib Dems: BAA too complacent

Tuesday, 22, Apr 2008 12:00

Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Norman Baker has made clear his support of a breakup of UK airports operator BAA.

Mr Baker's comments come as the Competition Commission publishes its interim report into BAA's hold over Britain's airports, prior to the publication of its final report in August.

He described BAA as "part of the problem", not "part of the solution", and made clear his opposition to its operation of London's largest two airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.

"It has become complacent and concentrated on lobbying the government rather than serving the needs of passengers," Mr Baker added.

"BAA should be required to sell some of its airports."
