Titan prisons are in the news again, with the National Council of Independent Monitoring Boards saying the huge jails would be difficult to staff and could put vulnerable inmates at risk.

It is just the latest attack on a project which has few friends outside of government.

The Ministry of Justice says titan prisons are a good solution to Britain's shortage of jail space but opposition parties and penal reform groups say small, local prisons have better rehabilitation rates.

The prisons, which will probably be located in London, the west Midlands and the north west, will cost about £350 million each.
