Terror police

Wednesday, 16 Apr 2008 10:09
Jacqui Smith's expected announcement of 300 more anti-terror police officers is raising concerns about what more can be done to protect Britain from terrorism.

The home secretary will announce that civilian staff and police officers are expected to take up the new positions in an effort to shore up work preventing young people from turning to extremism.

Challenging terrorist ideology, strengthening community relations and tackling individuals who are believed to be vulnerable to extremist ideologies are among the different approaches Ms Smith is advocating.

The government's approach is open to criticism on two fronts, however.

Civil liberties groups are frustrated by the 42-day pre-charge detention limit currently being pursued in the counter-terrorism bill.

Meanwhile some are concerned security forces are not doing enough to address threats of radicalisation in Britain's disaffected communities.

And political parties are questioning the funding of the 300 additional staff proposed today.
