The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) has welcomed plans to roll out nearly 300 new anti-terror police officers over the next three years.
Its lead on preventing extremism, West Yorkshire police's Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison, said police would be helped in their "positive" work of neighbourhood policing.
"Preventing extremism cannot be for the police alone, but relies on effective delivery in coordination with local government, with community groups, education providers and others," he said.
Ms Smith's announcement was "extremely welcome" as a result, he added, adding it "helps builds our capability to meet this challenge".
