Lib Dems: This is an anti-Labour vote

Friday, 23, May 2008 12:00

Chris Rennard, chief executive of the Liberal Democrats, comments to politics.co.uk on the Conservative gain of Crewe and Nantwich:

"Tonight saw a very robust Liberal Democrat vote.

"The result was an anti-Labour government vote - particularly on tax issues - not a pro-Tory vote. And in many places you look to Liberal Democrats as the alternative to Labour.

"In this particular seat at this time we weren't in second place. But we're second in many urban centres, such as Glasgow, Liverpool or Oldham where the Liberal Democrats are the alternative to Labour.

"If it had been there we would have been the swing against the Labour government's tax policies."
