David Cameron has delivered his leader's speech to the Conservative party conference in Birmingham, calling for delegates and voters to put trust in his judgment, rather than Gordon Brown's experience.

The Tories have had a tough conference, struggling to achieve headlines after the financial chaos in global markets reached a climax with the rejection of Washington's bank bailout offer.

Mr Cameron made an emergency statement to the conference on Tuesday, saying he would work with the government to prevent similar scenes to those taking place in the US, where politicians have been accused of acting in a partisan manner over the issue.

Mr Cameron rejected Mr Brown's argument that experience was needed during times of crisis, saying character and judgment were more important during the tough times ahead.
