The government is launching the first stage of its autumn fightback today with a suspension of stamp duty on properties up to the value of £175,000.

A package to help first-time buyers and those facing repossessions was also announced.

The announcements constitute Labour's long-expected attempt to wrestle back the political agenda from the Conservatives with a range of mechanisms to help those suffering from the economic downturn.

Party insiders say Gordon Brown has until after the party conference to prove he can improve Labour's fortunes.
