easyjet: We will launch our own offsetting scheme

easyjet has pledged to establish its own offsetting scheme this summer, as fresh criticisms are levied against the airline industry today.

The airline is one of the many leading low-budget airlines to come under sustained attack from environmental groups,

Impending government regulations are set to establish basic standards for offsetting services, ensuring accurate information is provided to the customer about the extent to which they can offset their carbon emissions.

An easyjet spokesperson said: "easyJet plans to launch its own carbon offsetting scheme this summer.

"We believe that for airlines that are already among the most environmentally efficient, such as easyJet, carbon offsetting is a way to further minimise our impact on the environment.

"However, it is important to do it properly - to ensure that customers can make an informed choice and that the money actually makes a difference."

The aviation industry was at the receiving end of fierce criticism from MPs on the environmental audit committee (EAC) this morning, who described their engagement with offsetting as "diverse and generally unsatisfactory".
