NUT: Too many staff unfamiliar with diplomas

Nearly half of all teachers directly involved in teaching diplomas say they have not received sufficient training, a National Union of Teachers (NUT) survey suggests.
Acting general secretary Christine Blowers says the lack of "clear, unambiguous information" about the diplomas, which will be introduced for the first time in September, means they carry major risk for the education system.
"The NUT has warned consistently that the introduction of the diplomas would be a massive task with high risks," she said.
"I urge the government to evaluate the introduction of the first five diplomas and not introduce anymore until it can be absolutely sure that schools can cope."
There are five diplomas to be introduced this year, including creative and media, construction and engineering. Five more are due to be introduced for the first time in September 2009, including hair and beauty, while September 2010 will see a further four added.
