Liberty: Intelligence must be turned to evidence

The human rights campaign group, Liberty, has said the government should stop carrying out "pseudo-justice" based on suspicion and intelligence, and instead concentrate on bringing more terror suspects to courts.
Director Shami Chakrabarti welcomed "sensible new recommendations" in today's joint committee on human rights report aimed at speeding up the prosecution of terror suspects.
She supported the committee's recommendation to allow the use of phone-tap evidence in courts and agreed with the report's criticisms of proposals to use detention without charge as a preventative measure.
"For five years too much time has been spent building shadowy systems of pseudo-justice based on suspicion and intelligence alone," Ms Chakrabarti said.
"The joint committee on human rights has reminded us of the duty to turn intelligence into evidence, charges and proof to effectively prevent future terrorist acts."
