Lib Dems: No solution in sight

The government's attempts to tackle alcohol-related violence, binge drinking and underage consumption have failed to address key concerns, according to the Liberal Democrats.
Instead, the solutions offered by Gordon Brown's administration amount to "little more than hot air", says the party.
"The problems the government is talking about today are the same ones we were told the new licensing system would solve," said Don Foster, Liberal Democrat culture, media and sport spokesman.
The party was commenting following the release of the government's review of its decision to permit 24-hour drinking in the UK.
"Ministers told us the Act would reduce drunken disorder, binge drinking and underage drinking. In reality we’ve seen a rise in violent crimes late at night, too many licensed premises still selling to children, and soaring alcohol related A&E admissions," continued Mr Foster.
Specifically the party criticises proposals for a 'two strikes and you’re out' policy for retailers selling alcohol to minors, which the party views as a retreat from measures unveiled several years ago.
"More gimmicks and tough talk aren’t the answer. We need to ensure police and local authorities have the resources to enforce the laws that are already in place," concluded Mr Foster.
