Lib Dems condemn teachers strike action

Wednesday, 02 Apr 2008 10:28
The Liberal Democrats have questioned the validity of the National Union of Teacher's (NUT) decision to strike.

The party claims the move will not help the organisation achieve its aim of an improved pay offer.

"Strike action does not seem likely to lead to an improved offer this year and will disrupt the education of children – which should be the first priority," explained Liberal Democrat shadow schools secretary, David Laws.

"Instead, teaching unions should keep up the pressure on the government for better future settlements, in order to avoid recruitment and retention problems down the line."

Yet, the party did acknowledge teachers received a pay offer below expectations - but sought to place this in a wider political context.

"The teachers’ pay award fell below the current level of inflation, as is the case for most public sector workers at this time," concluded Mr Laws.
