Lib Dems: A victory for liberty

Tuesday, 14, Oct 2008 12:00

Nick Clegg leader of the Liberal Democrats comments on the vote against 42-days:

"The government's climb down over 42-days detention is a victory for everyone who cares about the civil liberties we enjoy as British citizens.

"The decision to prepare emergency legislation instead is merely a fig leaf which does little to disguise their defeat.

"Generations of Britons have fought and died to preserve these freedoms and the government has learnt the hard way that they cannot be ditched on a whim.

"The push for 42-days detention was more about ministers posturing and looking tough than it ever was about fighting terrorism."
