Davis resigns

Thursday, 12 Jun 2008 15:01
Mr Davis' move is without precedent, experts say
David Davis, shadow home secretary, has resigned from his frontbench position and as MP for Haltemprice and Howden.

He will now campaign for re-election in the seat as a campaign against the government's encroachment on civil liberties.

The move is considered unprecedented by parliamentary experts, and it has wrong-footed his own colleagues as much as the government.

Mr Davis enjoys a relatively safe majority in the seat, and the Liberal Democrats – who share his views on the subject – are not going to run against him.
