Home Office: This proposal will work

Wednesday, 11, Jun 2008 12:00

A Home Office spokesperson comments on the vote over 42-day detention:

"The new proposal for extending pre-charge detention where there is a grave exceptional terrorist threat will work. The safeguards that we have introduced add rigour to the proposals without compromising the police's ability to investigate, and where necessary charge, suspected terrorists.

"We have worked hard to ensure that our proposals give Parliament the scrutiny it deserves, without compromising the operational nature or security of an investigation.

"We have gone to great lengths to consult on our proposals over a long period of time with the police and a broad range of other stakeholders.”
