Garnier: A momentous day in British politics

Thursday, 12, Jun 2008 12:00

Edward Garnier, Tory MP and former shadow attorney general, comments on David Davis' resignation as an MP:

"I am shocked and surprised as most people would be. It has come as a bolt out of the blue. I've heard the secretary has just made a statement and I can entirely understand his reason for his resignation.

"I share, his concerns about the increasing surveillance and the loss of civil liberties. I led for the opposition on identity card in 2006 and I have been as concerned as others by the 42-days debate.

"This will expose a large gap between the modern Conservative party and the current Labour government. The detail of what happens between now and the date of the by-election is yet to be worked out but certainly this is a momentous day for modern British politics.
