Draft Queen's Speech
Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:31
The government has revealed its legislative plans for the 2008/09 session.
Gordon Brown has been struggling in recent months and sought to use today's draft Queen's Speech as a way of putting all the bad headlines behind him.
First introduced last year by the new prime minister, the draft Queen's Speech's purpose is to reveal the government's parliamentary agenda before the official Queen's Speech this autumn.
The idea, in short, is to trigger a debate about the issues Mr Brown thinks are most important for the country.
politics.co.uk is offering the biggest news stories and in-depth analysis as the day progresses.
But we are also covering the debate Mr Brown is calling for – and Speakers' Corner is where that debate is taking place.
We will be bringing you responses from both lobby groups and the general public throughout the coming days.
Is the prime minister prioritising in the right areas? Will today's announcements be enough to save this government? We want your views, so get in touch.
