Labour rebels: We need a bigger debate on Trident

Monday, 04 Dec 2006 09:15
Several Labour backbenchers will today join CND in delivering an alternative white paper on the future of Britain's nuclear weapons system to Downing Street.

As the government publishes its plans for replacing Trident, former environment minister Michael Meacher, Jon Trickett, Jeremy Corbyn and Linda Riordan will say more debate is needed.

"There should not be a pre-determined outcome on a decision of this magnitude. There is more than one alternative to Trident replacement and there should be a full debate on each one," Mr Trickett said.

John McDonnell, who has pledged to challenge Gordon Brown for the Labour leadership when Tony Blair quits, said ministers must listen to MPs.

"There is overwhelmingly opposition within the Labour party and wider trade union movement - as shown by the vote at TUC Congress - and this is such a serious issue that it should be put for democratic decision at Labour party conference."
