GMB: Trident has big impact on jobs

Monday, 04 Dec 2006 17:15
The GMB union has warned ministers of several "practical matters" they must consider when deciding whether to replace Trident.

National secretary of engineering and shipbuilding Keith Hazleswood said that although his union did not have a position on the future of the nuclear weapons system, he stressed there were hundreds of jobs at stake.

"Firstly, as I told the House of Commons defence select committee recently, unless new orders are placed soon the skills and technical expertise needed to do this submarine building will be lost to the UK," he said.

"If this happens the UK would struggle to build these vessels if they were to be needed in the future.

"Second, if parliament decides not to go ahead it must pay heed to the impact on jobs and on communities that will be affected and as well as the impact on UK manufacturing as whole."
