CND: Public must have their say on Trident

Monday, 04 Dec 2006 16:23
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) has greeted the government’s decision to replace the Trident nuclear weapons system with dismay.

However, the group has vowed to continue to campaign for a full public and parliamentary debate on the issue.

Chairwoman Kate Hudson said: "We have been promised a consultation, parliamentary debate and vote on this issue.

"It is incumbent on the government now urgently to outline a process for public consultation and explain how this will feed into the decision-making process."

CND claims 59 per cent of Britons oppose replacing Trident and hopes the public will get a chance to express their views during the three-month consultation.

Ms Hudson said: "The British people in its majority oppose this step. They must be allowed to have their input into this crucial decision."
