President Pervez Musharraf has resigned his post, effectively sidestepping government attempts to impeach him.

The man who came to power in a military coup in 1999 aided America and the UK in its global counter-terrorism strategy – much to the ire of Islamic forces within his own country.

But western support became lukewarm since the war in Iraq, with serious concerns over the trustworthiness of Pakistani security services.

Leaders of the country's ruling coalition are now set to enter talks in Islamabad to discuss who will succeed him.
