FDF: Banning junk food not the solution
Friday, 19, May 2006 12:00
The UK food and drink manufacturing industry (FDF) supports the government's pledge to improve school dinners, but does not think a junk food ban is the right solution.
The Department for Education and Skills is going to ban the sale of crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks in schools and will limit deep fried food to two portions a week.
FDF director general Melanie Leech said the organisation had played a "constructive part" in the consultation process and supported the movement towards a healthier school menu.
However, she added: "FDF regrets that the [new] standards ban certain foods from being vended in schools. Positive actions are always more effective than prescription.
"FDF continues to be committed to a ‘whole school approach’. Educating children about diet and health will help them better understand the range of information and choices available to them both within and outside the school gates."
