Tories: Where is the detail on immigration?

Tuesday, 24, Oct 2006 12:00

The Conservatives have called for more details on how Britain will restrict working rights of Bulgarian and Romanian immigrants when those countries join the EU.

Responding to John Reid's statement today, shadow home secretary David Davis said: "This statement is more notable by what it doesn't say and what it doesn't answer."

Welcoming what the home secretary had said "in principle", he noted that the Tories had called for limits on working rights "some two months ago" and stressed: "Where is the detail?"

Mr Reid had "merely slipped out a limited written statement designed to deal with tomorrow's headlines but which leaves several important questions unanswered", he argued.

"This is a vitally important area of policy that will affect the economy, public services and community relations," he added.

"If Mr Reid continues to absent himself from any proper debate we will continue to have a government that is quite simply divided and paralysed."
