Reid: We will not tolerate illegal working

Tuesday, 24, Oct 2006 12:00

John Reid has admitted that policing his tough new restrictions on workers from Bulgaria and Romania "will present some challenges" but promised the rules would be "robustly enforced".

The home secretary told the House of Commons that workers without a permit would be hit with an on-the-spot penalty, and firms taking on an illegal worker would be punished with a "hefty fine".

"I must be clear to the House that policing the system against a background of free movement to the UK will present some challenges," he said.

"But workers or employers who are tempted by this into breaking the rules should be aware that they will be robustly enforced."

He added: "Employing illegal workers undercuts legitimate business and leads to exploitation. It will not be tolerated."

Mr Reid said help would be provided for employers to help them fulfil their responsibilities, including an information campaign and a helpline.
