Grangemouth strike

Monday, 28 Apr 2008 11:36
A two-day strike at the Grangemouth oil refinery has sparked concerns about the security of Britain's energy supply.

The government in London has kept a relatively low-profile on the dispute, despite the impact of the walkout being around £50 million a day.

Increased imports from Europe were to counter the effect of the refinery's shutdown, which has also resulted in the closure of BP's Forties pipeline. This supplies around 30 per cent of Britain's daily oil requirement.

The Scottish government has been at pains to avoid panic-buying and its efforts have largely been successful, but some forecourts have been forced to close north of the border.

At the heart of the dispute is a disagreement between unions and operating firm Ineos about pensions.

But the strike also has a political element which touches on energy supply, industrial relations and the government's transport strategy.
