The act prevents discrimination by businesses against gay peopleThe act prevents discrimination by businesses against gay people

A coalition of religious groups will tonight gather outside parliament to protest against laws that prevent discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.

The demonstration coincides with a House of Lords debate on the Northern Ireland Sexual Orientation Regulations Act.

The law, which came into force in Northern Ireland on January 1st, prevents businesses from refusing to supply products or services on the grounds of sexual orientation.

Christian, Jewish and Muslim groups believe the legislation, which is introduced to the rest of the UK in April, could require them act against their religious beliefs.

The Lords will be voting on a motion to annul the bill because it undermines freedom of religion.

However, gay rights groups and trade unions have defended the bill and said it will stop gay people being treated like second class citizens.
