Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association: Kelly putting religious priorities first

Monday, 16 Oct 2006 09:52
The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) have backed calls for Ruth Kelly to stand down following reports that she attempted to block gay rights legislation.

When Ms Kelly was appointed communities secretary "there was a strong suspicion that she would not be even-handed as far as LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender] people were concerned," said GALHA secretary George Broadhead.

There was conflict between her membership of Catholic group Opus Dei and her responsibilities for equality, he argued, adding: "These latest events indicate that she is putting her loyalty to Opus Dei first."

Calling for her resignation, Mr Broadhead raised concerns Ms Kelly would grant "large-scale opt-outs for religious groups" from the equality laws.

He added: "LGBT people are getting a raw deal from this woman, who should never have been given this sensitive post in the first place considering her membership of Opus Dei."
