The government will announce measures to reduce the number of homeless youngsters
New measures aimed at reducing the number of young homeless people are set to be unveiled by communities secretary Ruth Kelly today.
The multi-million pound package will end the use of bed and breakfast hotels for 16 and 17-year-olds, provide training for youngsters, mediation for families, and emotional support.
Addressing the Andy Ludlow homelessness awards on the 40th anniversary of the seminal television drama
Cathy Come Home, Ms Kelly is also expected to announce measures to help reduce the number of people living in temporary accommodation.
Government figures show there are 90,000 new cases taken on by local authorities each year.
Of these, nearly a quarter are young people who leave home after their parents are no longer willing to accommodate them. A further 20 per cent are the result of relationships breaking down.
Homelessness charities have welcomed the proposals, but called on the government to provide more social housing.
