Lib Dems: Effect of foreign policy requires vigilance

Friday, 10, Nov 2006 12:00

Politicians must do more to tackle the causes of radicalisation, the Liberal Democrats have urged after the head of MI5 claimed there were 30 terror plots planned in Britain.

Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg said the revelations, from MI5's director general Eliza Manningham-Buller "underline the gravity of the threat we all face".

Dame Eliza warned of young terror recruits being "motivated" by perceived injustices against Muslims.

Mr Clegg said the MI5 head's call for "more to be done to tackle the causes of radicalisation" should "be a wake up call for all political parties".

"The effect of our foreign and domestic policies on opinion in our Muslim communities, especially young men, now requires constant vigilance."

"New security measures alone will not win the battle of hearts and minds if they unwittingly push more and more people into an extremist direction."
