Cameron: The end of New Labour
Friday, 23, May 2008 12:00
Conservative leader David Cameron believes Labour's campaign in Crewe reflects the demise of the New Labour movement.
"The Labour campaign was backward-looking, divisive, in many ways the end of New Labour. I think it was in many ways a mistake for them.
"It is very significant that for the first time in almost 30 years we've take a by-election win off the Labour party… but I think what matters is thousands of people came out positively for the Conservative party. They got out there and said we want a Conservative member of parliament. My message to them is – we won't let you down, we want to build on this win.
"There isn't one hint of complacency. As I've said before, I don't want to win an election just on the back of a failing Labour government, a failing prime minister... I want to give people positive reasons to come out and vote for the Conservatives in a general election, whenever that comes."
"I want to go on building this broad coalition for change so we can bring our country a better government."
