BYC: Support for voting age bill

Tuesday, 10, Jun 2008 12:00

The British Youth Council (BYC) says it supports Julie Morgan's attempt to lower the voting age from 18 to 16.

Its chief executive, James Cathcart, said: "At a time when society is expecting young 16 and 17 year olds to take responsibility for their actions, we at BYC want them to be given not only a voice on the policies that affect them, but a vote. We support this bill."

A BYC volunteer, 18-year-old Scott, was one of the young campaigners who watched the debate in the Commons. He added: "It was great to visit parliament today and watch MPs debate passionately about a campaign I really care about. I'm looking forward next to checking out the work of the Youth Citizenship Commission on this issue. Votes at 16 is still the way forward."
