Prince Harry has been an "exemplary solider" while in Afghanistan and has been "serving with dedication in the finest traditions of our armed forces," the prime minister said.

Following the media leak revealing Prince Harry's deployment to Helmand province, Gordon Brown has praised the prince's actions.

Thanking Prince Harry alongside all other service personnel for their contribution, Mr Brown said the "whole of Britain will be proud of the outstanding service he is giving".

Mr Brown added: "For the last ten weeks, he has joined the thousands of members of the British armed forces who have served with such distinction in difficult circumstances in Afghanistan since 2001."
